House Rules

HOURS: Check-in from 2pm / Check-out by 10am. You are welcome to vacate your room, pack your car, and park on the field next door while you head out for a walk or swim. Use of facilities after checkout is available upon request.

DEPARTURE: Please return room keys prior to departure. All rooms and cabins need to be vacated and keys handed in at reception by 10am.

DAMAGES AND BREAKAGES: If you break it, you pay for it.

MINORS: Children are at all times the responsibility of their parents or guardians.

SEPTIC SYSTEM: Our septic system is entirely organic. Please do not throw or flush any foreign objects down the toilet.

VALUABLES: Please take care of your valuables. We take no responsibility for loss or damage.

SWIMMING AND HIKING: You require a permit from Cape Nature to access the river and mountain. McBains will not be held responsible for any safety or other issue arising from accessing Cape Nature’s property or the Limietberg Nature Reserve.

WI-FI: McBains has been curated as a space to get offline. We have limited Wi-Fi in the lounge area, which we rely on to run our business. We strongly discourage adults and children from using the lounge (reading area) for doom scrolling, as this goes against our vibe. If you need an iPad to keep your kids occupied, please download content before you arrive so it can be viewed offline in the rooms rather than in the lounge. And if you need to check in with work or home, we ask that you keep it brief. Walking into a lounge filled with books and a beautiful view of the mountains, only to see people with their heads in their phones, is a real buzzkill.

MUSIC AND NOISE: No loud music or excessive noise is allowed. Please remain mindful of other guests at all times, as our intention is to nurture a quiet, reflective space. All amplified music must be kept inside the premises and PA speakers may not be placed outside. All music must be turned off by 10pm and kept at a volume that does not disturb the surrounding area or village.

FIRES AND BRAAIS: Fires may only be made in designated areas and must be supervised at all times. All fires and braais must be extinguished by 10pm.

WATER AND ELECTRICITY: Please use conservatively.

RECYCLING AND RUBBISH: Please clean and separate your recycling and place it in the correctly marked bins or crates (glass / plastic / paper / organic / uncertain / metal). Paper packaging and cigarette butts may be discarded in the hot tub fire.

ALCOHOL: Excessive drinking of alcohol is not allowed. No drunk or disorderly behaviour will be tolerated. Guests are strongly encouraged to take their empty bottles home with them, as we do not have nearby recycling.

SMOKING: No smoking inside the rooms or communal areas. Smoking is allowed outdoors, away from other guests. It is incumbent upon the smoker to dispose of their cigarette butts appropriately, for example in the hot tub fire.

BOOKS & BOARD GAMES: Please return all books and board games to the shelf or trunk from whence they came. Please enjoy our books but do not remove them from the property or take them home. Ask for your free copy of the Laugh it Off Annual on departure.

TOWELS: Guests are asked to please bring their own towels for use on and off the property.

KEYS: Lost keys will be charged for.

LOST PROPERTY: Please remember to do a final sweep of McBains before you leave, as all lost property will be placed in the lost property box and donated to charity if not collected from McBains within one month.
Please obey our House Rules at all times. Anyone who violates the rules of McBains may be asked to leave immediately, without any refund. Thank you!
